The Andalusian Government has awarded the contract for the construction of the Third Hospital of Málaga to Malaka NHM – a joint venture between renowned Spanish architectural firm Estudio Lamela, specialist healthcare design practice AIDHOS Arquitec, and engineering consultancies SENER and ARCS Estudios.
The hallmarks of the project will include corrective noise mitigation measures, the implementation of design principles and improvements around the humanisation of space, and compliance with requirements for sustainability, energy and economic suitability.
The new complex will involve an estimated investment of €380 million and will have a total built area of 270,300 sqm. It consists of four towers that will rise on a five-storey base.
A dozen floors will be above ground, with three basements, totalling 15 floors. The hospitalisation area, which occupies eight floors, will feature 27 hospitalisation units, 810 rooms, and a day hospital with 108 posts, as well as four ICU units, 42 operating rooms, 48 outpatient major surgery posts, 189 outpatient clinics, 31 special examination rooms, and a teaching and research area.
Cornerstones of the design include the flexibility and versatility of the spaces, the primacy of natural light, and ease of circulation. It’s described as a bioclimatic and efficient building that meets strict sustainability criteria.
According to Estudio Lamela, a friendly and approachable architecture has been created but delivered through a powerful and modern image. The specific characteristics of Malaga are taken into account in regard to climate, luminosity and vegetation. Indeed, the vegetation enters the interior spaces and, in turn, expands outwards, blurring the interior and exterior boundary.
The hospital centre promises to be state-of-the-art, with highly integrated information and communication technologies and full digitalisation. The hospital responds to a new and more personalised medicine, with a strong presence of research. And a public square is also incorporated, including commercial and restaurant spaces.
It’s expected that the combined experience of the companies within the joint venture will ensure the infrastructure delivers an efficient, innovative, sustainable building equipped with the necessary technologies to offer the patient maximum comfort.
